Aircraft are slow off the line compared to cars cause of their weight, DUH, but once they get rolling, watch out. Like Herc I have a few years of Military Aircraft under my belt. I've seen all the high speed stunts at air shows you can imagine. My favorite Blue Angel experience was sitting in the cockpit of my B-1, waiting to be towed across the runway. The Blue Angels took off and stayed low to the runway. I looked down on them as they raced by after 2 miles of acceleration. (Our runway is 3 miles)

it might have been a LITTLE closer without the afterburner, but I would still bet on the jet.

They should have done a half mile race, it would have been closer.

Or even a 2 mile race, like the Veyron.

10,000 foot run no car would have a chance. Heck even a herc at 10,000 feet has got a pretty good head of steam going.

One thing I noticed in that vid was the plane was at idle when the car launched. Had they set the engine power with the brakes on the ET would have been better.

Really? Pretty sure it would still win, it should be travelling in excess of 300 mph after 10 seconds with 22,000 ft-lbs of thrust and 37,000 lbs of weight.

On second thought The car would give it a better run for the money. But still 5,000' isn't all that far to accellerate a 37,000 pound plane only using 22,000 pounds of thrust. Next time I see one of my pilots that flew 18s I'll have to ask him what the take off roll was with no AB.

Matter of fact didn't Top gear or some one do a car vs plane run where the car had to go to the end of the runway turn around and come back and the plane had to take off climb to 10,000 feet turn around and come screaming back to the finish line?

They did one with the veyron through switzerland to somewhere in france I think, plane vs car. Wasn't a direct path for the plane so there was a fighting chance.
