During qualifying, he hit a wall, went flying and hit a metal pole at over 90 mph. Killed instantly. I saw the video online but now it's being taken down.

Also a lady hit the wall and was knocked unconscious. They said this track was the most challenging ever, now they are saying it might be too dangerous. Opening ceremony is tonight...it will be interesting to see if they continue doing the luge this year.

NBC showed it a couple of times in slow motion. He hit the support beam solid and hard, head first upside down going 80mph.

This is very unfortunate.
I read the track designers are pretty much blaming him. I'm no expert in luging but as an engineer, I think it is up to the track designers to make it safe even when the athlete makes mistakes (not saying he did - I don't know). Just like a company has to design a product to be relatively safe when misused.

Those poles seem like a bad idea to put right there.

Do you have any ideas on how to make going 80+ mph on your stomach safer? wink

Ouch! That's give me a cold chill on my body to see that guy flying out over 80 mph on metal pole. That's really painful to watch. I'm surprise he doesn't "torn" body like blood all over. Maybe his strong suit keep his torn body in?

Kind example car hit deer like 70 mph that deer body usually torn off with bloody all over on the road.

There is 1 sick person make gif that his flying body into world trader tower (airplane crash into the building). That's pretty disrespect. I rather not post this gif. I know you would not like to see that.

Well part of their "fix" was to put up plywood to make a wall. I guess at 90mph you would break through the wall at a right angle, but from a glancing angle playwood or a net of some sort would hold you in. Anything is better than hitting a steel pole square on, head first.

I was surprised they didn't originally do a wall similar to that of a hockey rink.

x2. Some sort of plexiglass should do the trick.
