Hey guys,

I'm thinking of replacing my aging Kodak 3200 (1.3megapixel) digicam.

Which cameras do you guys use? Any opinions on other models?

Ideally, I'm thinking of spending about $300-400 so any recommendations in that price range would be great.

Thanks in advance!

I love my Olympus 3000 Zoom. 3.3 megapixels and the quality is outstanding.

In general I'm a big fan of Olympus cameras. I've had three of them so far; no problems, just upgrading.

I currently own the C-2100 UltraZoom. It's 2.1MP and has a 10x optical zoom with image stabilization. It also has audio capture and QuickTime movie capabilities.

Here's an awesome review site: DP Review

Hey Brian and Ross... Do the Olympus cameras you've owned have the ability to take decent pics in low light? I have an Olympus D600L (yeah, I know... it's old as dirt) that can't take pics for squat in low light.

Thanks,
Marc

Marc,

My low-light pics aren't the best, but I can usually improve them greatly with some photo editing software to adjust the contrast, etc. My camera has a ton of manual settings that I haven't taken the time to learn. One reason why I bought this camera was because of these features and I think my pics will improve once I learn how to tweak the settings.

Thanks for the info guys, I'll take a look at the models you recommended.

AS to lowlight picture taking, did you guys ever hear of the Sony model digital camcorder they put out a while ago?

The lowlight filter they had put in it was so powerful that it could actually film through light clothing! devileek

Not that that was what Marc is looking to do or anything wink laugh

I love my Nikon CoolPix 990...the 995 is the same thing with a few mods and its like $599 now. Takes awesome low light shots...go poke around in here for some..they are at the bottom but all the pics are taken with that camera as well as all the ones on my website (link in sig) that didnt come from film (which very few arent from my camera).

Hey Shag,

My uncle has the 995 and its pretty nice. But given that I just take pictures of my car, my goofy friends and random stuff - I don't really need a $500+ camera.

But thanks for the suggestion.

Buy it once is my philosophy.

I never used to take that many pics myself. Probably around 1000 my whole life if you think about 24-32 pics per roll it adds up. But with the 990 I have taken 5000 in the 18 months that I have had it. Once you get a nice camera you start wanting to take more pictures of stuff.

I look at it this way. This camera and my Epson Photo 820 makes prints that are hard to tell are not from film. I will probably never buy another camera again unless this just gets so old that crazy new technology comes out and make it look like azz.

Hey Marc:

I can't really answer that as I usually try to have good light for picture taking. I'm no photographer, so who knows. I think the camera can definitely do it, but whether or not I can is a different story.
