No one here ever made that remark. By the way that list goes way beyond 1986.

On a side note the 97+ GTPs make way more hp then that 86 GP aero-coupe.

a lot of the cars on the list were not made by GM but upgraded by aftermarket specialty houses...great as they might be they werent production cars...I cant imagine someone making such a statement since GM has more divisions than any other automaker it almost stands to reason they would offer more performance cars than anyone else. They have had their share of paper tigers but plenty of great cars have more than made up for any missteps they may have taken in the last four decades.

Most of those cars listed are as t-bat said aftermarket set-ups. Also remember you can take an ls1 throw it into a cavalier and call it a sports car even though itll be more of a sleeper. But gm doesnt market most cars as true sports cars. Camaros and firebird are sports cars along with corvettes for one reason, they were sports/muscle cars when created and thats what they kept. The fiero is a nice little sportster but its fast cuz of how light it is a fiero gt only has around 180 hp but add that to a 2000 lb car and itll be fast. To me my gtp is not a true sports car, its a car i bought cuz i wanted some power but also luxury in it. Plus to take on a camaro/firebird or vette you gotta beef up the car a lot. but thats what i think.

Notice that it's only Pontiac listed?
No Chevy, Buick, Olds.... And don't forget the GMC performance trucks.... wink

As for the Sports Car/Muscle Car remarks..... I'm not defining anything, but it seems to me that in the past, I've been informed by more than one person that a Vette is a Sports Car, and the F-Bodies and Mustangs are Muscle Cars.... I think the defining factor may be that a Sports car only has 2 seats.... I believe it may also have something to with the performance factor... Meaning the Vette is made to perform in all aspects(making it a Sports Car) The Muscle Car is just made to go fast.
If anyone wants to argue these comments, you go right ahead. I don't have anything to argue with, but I'm interested to find out how other people think.

I'm on board with that. True sports cars are two seaters and usually lean all their comprimising towards performance...power, handling, braking all take point over ride comfort, luxury and luggage space.

Muscle cars are mostly one step down from this and are usually 2+2 cars (meaning they have a pitiful excuse for padding called a back seat) but still lean towards peformance in most categories.

Performance cars is the area I believe the GP falls into, be it coupe or sedan, this car does many things well. Plenty of room, comforts and carry space, along with enough ponies to still make it responsive and fun to drive.

production numbers spell a lot of thisout since the Vette is a niche market car, muscle cars and performance cars follow with increasing numbers.
Pontiac pestered the GM brass for quite a few years for version of the Corvette but GM knew it would sully the image of "America's Sports Car"...a smart move on their part I think.
But I do still miss the Firebird.
