Have a '96 Jimmy that stinks pretty bad when I turn on the heat, A/C, or vents. Basically any time the fans are turned on.

It's been like this ever since I bought it used, but would like to fix it.

Any clues as to how to solve this?

Smell reminds me of a really strong waxy scent. Kind of like a box of Crayola crayons....

I had a problem like that once and it was the heater core. Don't know if its the same but the smell was anti-freeze. It was probably a mist coming out of a small hole, it was a very bad smell. Also there might actually be crayons down there crazy did the other owners have kids?

Park it in a city and leave the keys in it.

Heater core may be bad, but it does sound like the smell of coolant. Does your windshield steam up?

Actually my fiancee is the regular driver in this vehicle. She hasn't complained about the windshield at all, but I checked the coolant and it does seem to be a little low....

Is a heater core expensive? Would that still stink even if I have the A/C or vent on?

I don't know if heater cores are expensive, but I've heard that there a pain in the ass to change.

I to think heater core is bad. iirc they go bad pretty easy on those trucks. 96 is the newer body style isn't it? If so all those trucks suck I agree take it to the city and leave the keys in it.

On a side note a buddy of mine got pissed at someone who he saw keyed his car in a walmart parking lot. He confronted the guy and he said he did no such thing. After a few minutes of arguing my buddy went inside bought a bottle of deer pee (you know that stinky stuff to attract bucks) he then went back out into the parking lot to idiots car and dumped that whole bottle into the cowl vent. LOL the only way to rid the car of that smell is to replace all the ducting of the HVAC system.
