Does anyone here voluntarily subscribe to Satellite Radio?
If so, which service and what are your feelings about it?

When satellite radio first came out I thought there was no way I'm going to pay $10 a month for something I can get for free. I bought my wife an XM radio and 2 years subscription for her birthday about 5 years ago. A month later I bought myself an XM radio. A month after that I bought a home kit for work. It's been that long since I've listened to any terrestrial radio. I now pay $21 (tax included) a month for both of our XM radios and I don't see me going back to regular radio for quite some time.
It's one of those things that when you try it, you're hooked.

I have XM. Its pretty good, but nothing spectactular. I'm considering cancelling. Seems like all I'm paying for is so I dont hear commercials, but even some xm stations have those.

The merger for XM and Sirius was already approved by the stock holders. Both companies are struggling and a merger is really the only way satellite radio can survive.

My sister had XM back when they came out. It was really nice to get a clean signal and more R&B choices in my area. I also rigged it up for recording on the PC and making mp3s, which you really shouldn't do. :p

I've got XM, friend bought a radio cheap and I put it in the GP, then when I bought the G35 it already had the equipment, so I just swapped the radios on the account. It's nice being able to listen to your favorite channel during long drives.

Sirius here. I love it. I have radios in both cars and at home I play it through the online player. I find myself listening more to Sirius than watching TV. I could never go back.

Why are they both struggling, competition between the two, or what. I have 6,500 songs on an ipod, and all I listen to is the radio. And one of our great stations just disappeared Jan. 1st, 2008, bummer.

Plus both of them arent getting the number of subscriptions that they really need to become profitable.

If it was, they wouldn't have given him another 200 million for hitting a subscriber threshold. The real problem is the nature of their environment like satellite upkeep, research & development, and subsidizing the technology. Sirius and XM lose money on every radio that they sell. If the radios were actually marketed at the true manufacturing cost, the cheapest one would be $300. Sirius and XM write off the huge costs since they're hoping that R&D will eventually start reducing the costs of the radios and the market will grow. Both companies cite these operating issues with the real reason they need to merge.
