Well im getting ready to get a new game console. The ability to play blue ray or HD is the reason why. So PS3 with Blue ray (will have to be the 80gig for backwards compatability) or the 360 with HD?

I read somewhere that Blue Ray will become the STD. format. Right now BR and HD are about neck and neck in sales with BR getting the edge. Also you see BR advertised more. I'm thinking PS3 for the ability to play games and the BR (for your needs) but 360 is probably better for gaming. In the end, your going to have to get LCD or Plasma TV, unless you have that already. (my votes on LCD)

if you want games the 360 but if you want movies the PS3. HD has lost as of right now for the simple fact that in order to watch HD movies on the 360 you have to buy a separate attachment that costs $199. some interesting stuff was announced at the consumer electronics show this year. they might be making a version of the 360 with a built in HD player and the 360 might go to other manufactures instead of only being maid by microsoft (thats going to suck trying to explain the differences between systems).

Blu-Ray

And why the heck are there 2 different HD formats for DVD? What's the difference between Blu-Ray and HDDVD?

I think they are both going to die.

Nobody wants expensive HD movies when normal DVDs are cheap, easy to find, and already the current format.

The mass public isn't going to buy into re-purchasing their ENTIRE movie collection for the simple fact of being able to see individual pores on somebodys face.

It's like why would someone buy a HD 42" Plasma (no offense Herc) when they could have a 52" projection for way cheaper. Simple: People want the best and marketing/technology thrives on it.

Like anything, HD prices will come down and standard DVDs will eventually be phased out. It's like going from VHS to DVD. It's inevitable and the people who spend the money first benefit everyone.

If you want something to complain about, focus on HDMI.

Blu-ray will win the contest. Has better storage capability. Also it has most of the big film companies behind it.

LCD/Plasma have a much brighter and better picture and has a larger viewing angle, no dark spots. Totally worth the extra money in my opinion. I'm jealous herc.

I'm not really a Sony guy, but Blu-ray will win out. Higher storage capacity, production companies are leaving HD-DVD to go with Blu-ray. People will rebuy or just stop watching their favorite movies, just like they did with the switch from VHS to DVD. I'm sure there will be a Blu-ray player that will be able to play standard dvds at a reasonable price eventually. DVD has had its time in the sun, now its time for it to bow out.

I love my 360, but I would go with the PS3 if you're looking for a platform to watch videos from and play games. 360 has the games right now, but soon enough PS3 will get its legacy games released and the PS3 will be a great unit to have, I want to get PS3 just for Gran Turismo. Its going to become harder to find HD-DVD movies as time goes on, and everything will be released on Blu-ray.

I think I've said enough. Good luck with your choice.

x2

Time Warner stated their movies will all be on blu-ray. If Universal and the others go towards blue-ray, then it will be over. Marketing is the sole reason why one will win over the other. Just like what happened to beta and the Super CD. Even if it is better, get a guy with shiny teeth to sell you the other and you'll win.

As for as the two formats, one isn't really better than the other. Each have advantages/disadvantages that even them out. In reality, blu-ray will be replaced with something else shortly. Ugh, I can't remember the name of it but Time Warner would probably try to stop it.

One of the major hollywood labels just switched to BluRay two weeks ago. That means almost all the major labels are on BluRay so they will have the best content, and should probably eventually win.

If BluRay wins, I have to think Microsoft will sell an add-on BluRay drive (since their drive is an add-on, not built into the system). Of course this would cost more than a PS3, but it's just my hunch.

I didn't let this be the deciding factor for me. I just got a 360 because of the better games and it's what all of my friends have (so I can play them online).

If you like games more than movies, Xbox.

If you just care about movies and only play the occasional game, PS3.

Problem simplified. That's all there really is to it. Xbox hinted at releasing a BR player in the future anyway, and they have enough money to do it.

Ha! Beat you to it. :p crazy

I love my 360. I've got it hooked up to my 50" plasma and it's so nice. I don't watch movies on it thought, just games.

A friend let me borrow Rainbow Six Las Vegas and COD4 last night. Very cool games.

eek I thought I had trouble playing assassin's creed on a 32" TV.

I agree about movies. When I do watch them, I watch them on a dedicated DVD player. I just like seperate components.

There is one thing that limites the HD DVD, size. Thats why Blu-Ray will win, more high quality picture in the future when a normal HD DVD will fall behind.

As far as gaming systems, I stick to my 360. The PS3, STILL has a small selection of games.
