I don't follow drag racing, but like any other sport, it's a sad loss. Much like the stint of NASCAR and Indy-style drivers we've lost. If nothing else, more safety will probably come of this to help prevent future tragedies.

Wow...the car just randomly bursting into flames surprised me, but the crash at the end just...I was stunned.

Whose bright idea was it to have a concrete wall to stop speeding cars?! Someone needs to be strung up. If that had been designed for safety, he would probably still be alive today.

Top Fuel cars catch fire like that quite often when they experience catstropic failure. Usually from blowing the S/C off the intake. Shirley Muldowney swore off funny cars after she was trapped in one and was severly burned.

That runout after the trap looked awfully short plus the wall?

From watching the video I'd say he was unconscience after the explosion cause the car doesn't appear to slow at all and the chute looked more like it was blown off rather then activated.

I just pulled the track up on GE and I can't tell from the video but the aerial image of the track shows an additional 2200+ feet of pavement and 130' of sand. But that wall looked so much closer. The first turn out is 1400' from the trap and the last turn out is at the dirt.

Yeah I just saw the horrific crash on youtube. That's crazy! R.I.P. Scott Kalitta.

...That's a great shot of the track Herc and yeah on tv the track doesn't appear to be that long, but I guess going that fast, it doesn't take long. I don't understand the reasoning for concrete walls at the end of a track like that. I'm sure they will do a lot of investigations and some changes will be coming just like when Dale Earnhardt Sr. passed....

man...thats something, herc that shot makes the track look alot longer then the video, i looked at the video again and I can see the dirt at the end, but it still looks very short, like its changed sense that shot was taken ...idk, I guess ive seen a lot longer sand traps at different tracks, but like you said the initial explosion could of been what did him in, ...idk

thats an old shot....but the wall isnt close at all they dont have room to make the track longer because of local property reasons....yes a wall is bad but it so far down the track but that car coasted at very high speeds for a wile....RIP
