those are pretty sweet. The f-14 looks like the back half is on fire. I would be awesome to fly a jet like that for a living.

some cargo birds CAN go supersonic. If empty. with no fuel. in a nose dive. from full throttle. at 70,000 feet AGL. above the ocean.

But certainly not the C-130 Hercules. Lawd, I'd be havin a heart attack if that bird were to go supersonic with me in it! Darn thing shakes enough in the first place. yo, Herc, wanna give it a shot?

747 is one of the fastest comercial airplanes. Cruises as mach .84. So I guess if you did was rich said, hitting mach 1 plus wouldnt be out of the question.

you can actually see the vapor happen but it is very fast. I've seen a couple F-14s and F-18s tickle the sound barrier at Oceana NAS. The F-14 was incredible, you could see the plane closing like a missle with vapor whipping off the wings and fuselage, then it shot by show center almost silent, then a heartbeat later the jet roar made your chest rumble...WHAT A RUSH hammer

Nope never been supersonic.

As for those pics they are nice but a plane does not have to be supersonic to get that vapor cone. But it does make for a great photo.

As for getting from mach .84 to 1 will take quite a bit of extra. oomph. The f-14 and -18 needs afterburner to get the plane past mach 1.0. Right now the only plane in the US inventory that will allow the plane to cruise at over mach 1 without afterburning is the new F-22. A 747 will need to be in a deep dive to get there and then hope the wings hold up.
