On 1966 mexican gov. started a tax wich name is "tenencia", is based on the price of the cars and is payed anually, for example, my GP started paying around 1000 usd on 1997, now i have to pay someting like 300 usd for 2006 this tax was destinated to help gov. to afford the Olympic Games of 1968.

We still have to pay this tax on 2006, but sometimes people do not pay it, and usually this tax is discounted of the price when selling the car.

Well last week the gov. had the fabulous idea of attaching the emissions tests to this tax, this means that you have to pay this tax when you take your car to this emissions test (which is a due) and it is twice a year!

You know, whe have the best salaries for our governors IN THE WORLD! this country is amazing!

People has to pay taxes, but this is an abuse!!

mad mad

Here in Maine vehicle registration is $25 a year to the state but before you pay that you have to go to your town council and pay an excise based on KBB value. Which on a new car can be upwards of $600. In California new cars start at close to $400 a year and slowly drops as the vehicle gets older.

In Michigan the registration was based on the original value of the car. So I was a poor college student driving a 12 year old Oldsmobile 98 that had an original price tag of $23,000+ and my registration was through the roof.

Yes, it's sad that the level of money hungry-sucking people keeps getting worse year after year. frown

In you pay tax based on the purchase price & where you live, then registration fees are around 50 bucks per car, tags are 57 bucks for cars, 67 for trucks, and then you pay fees based on tax value on top of that.
example: My dad bought a new 2004 GMC 2500HD with duramax before he left for alaska, my tags, etc came due shortly after that... My tags for one year for my 98 GTP were 162.58 for one year on a six year old car at the time My dad registered his truck in AK, he didn't pay tax on the price of the truck (no sales tax in AK) and he registered his truck for 2 years with emissions testing fees included for 194 bucks talk about somebody getting rich off the little man!!!!

About $50 bucks registration + $19.95 for emissions testing every other year.

I never complained about this as I knew other areas had it a lot worse.
