Today I went to the muffler shop and they put on my new KYB GR-2 struts, that I got for christmas and put some timken wheel bearings on the front. As I was dreading my strut mounts were bad so I had to get those replaced. Cost about $930 for parts and installation. Now I hear my rear hubs going so I'm going to have to get those replaced. Cars are huge money pits, but for some reason I still love them.

The reason you still love them: Every time you push the pedal to the floor it puts a grin on your face. The squeal of tires and whine of a supercharger is nice as well.

You know if you were to do the work yourself it would cost you half as much as you spent.

Struts are pretty labor-intensive, and I'd rather have a good mechanic deal with my springs :rolleyes: Some people lack the gear to do things like that. And hey, brown, at least it's stuff that can be fixed, and it doesn't affect your ability to drive the car. Pretty cool Christmas present.

I dont have a spring compressor or the know how/air tools to install the struts. I could have put the wheel hubs in but I figured if they were going to be taking the struts off I'd pay for them to put the new hubs in too.
I had to buy the wheel hubs, and paid for about 2/3 of the over-all cost. Those Timkens arent cheap parts.

I'm buying new tires tommorow. Sucks, with road hazard and everything, its gonna cost $530 out the door. Bummer, since I need a new tranny eventually.

Add me to the new tranny list.... but I won't worry so long as I have my Dodge and this one keeps working for a while. Come summer, it's L67 transplant time. Who wants their ass handed to them by a pink GP? BTW, you can get a strut spring compressor from AZ in their loan-a-tool program. Pay a deposit, then return it for a refund. No compressor? Buy an electric impact wrench. I got one of ours for $50 recently and it works like a champ.

well its all done, and I was catching up on some sleep while they were working on her. Car rides a lot better and I'm content. I would like an impact wrench though. What brand is it? I've used the DeWalt mini impacts, but they run over $200.
My tranny has been rebuilt. takes a while to get the work done, but its worth it. Took two weeks for me, but theres no way I could or would even attempt to rebuild a trans.

It's our in house brand, Great Neck. We have one that's been used in the store forever, installing alternator pullies, removing power steering pullies and other tasks. It's been used and abused and still works great. It's rated at 200ftlbs.
