I believe that guys beat the other guys because of two things. One is primal instinct in the wild males battle for dominancy and the "right" to the herd. The other is they want to beat the girl but some form of chivalry prevents it.

It's not chivalry, people just want to blame the stranger (has to do with denial I think). Women to the same thing when their boyfriend cheats: they blame the girl, not the boyfriend.
