ok, I've finished post-processing most of my pics from the trip and have to decide just which ones to upload (too dang many)...si I figured the best way is to post them in sections, so I'll be doing sub-albums per each part of the trip. the first is downtown Chicago where I went down Lake st, right underneath the EL train tracks. I wanted just to barrel along at about 90mph so it would feel like "the french connection" laugh ...then we checked out Millineum Park and "The Bean"...I went to the museum of Science and Industry to see the U505 german sub (a seperate album)...then it was down to Navy Pier ( no good pics there, I'll spare you the stained glass window museum, which was cool but my wife went nuts shutterbugging there)...then we took in Chicago beach and the Magnificent Mile...all in all a very cool place...so pics part one, with more to follow.

At the museum of science and industry is the only surviving german WW2 U-boat, the U505...this is an awesome exhibit, especially the time lapse film of how they dug a giant hole in the ground and brought this rare artifact to display...literally building the room around the sub...you come into the room on a balcony at the deck level and then descend around to the floor...its pretty hard to believe that this is a pip-squeek compared to modern day submarines. the extra exhibits are pretty cool as well, including the periscopes, the piston and rod from one of the diesel engines and the see thru torpedo...which I was amazed to find is mostly batteries and very little warhead...there was also Craig Breedlove's Spirit of America land speed record car...which is essentially an F-104 Starfighter witht the wings cut off...but the U505 alone was worth the price of admisson.

next stop was Manteno IL and Rad Rides by Troy...this si a very unassuming little place with no big signs that tell of the awesome work that goes on here. The people were all very open and friendly and they let us tour the shop at our leisure. Troy himself was on route to a show in Wisconsin, but his dad Jack was a very friendly host. Shop Foreman Brian Ferguson was also very friendly and gave us some inside peeks on a few projects. the pic of the 67 Lincoln convertible shows it covered in plastic due to interior work. I chatted with Levi Green who may be young (23) and small of stature, but his metalwork speaks volumes...I dont know who owns the GP pictured, but it was out back next to the 5th wheel trailer and those 18s looked very sharp so I had to shoot it...the radical 40 ford convertible in primer is going to be one serious ride. check out the laid back windshield which hooks to a much modidied Mustang ragtop...I didnt shoot too many pics as I was trying not to get in the way of all the work that was going on.

I'll try and get the airforce museum pics up soon...I just have to decide which ones cuz I shot way too many...but here are a few wide angle panoramas...I pieced several shots together for each one to try and give a little scope of how big the hangars are.

this one is the B-29 that dropped the"fat man" plutonium bomb on Nagasaki...its called "Bockscar" and is obviously in the WW2 hangar. the green bomb you see under the tail section is the "little boy" hydrogen bomb...the yellow box under the wing is the tail fins of "fat man"
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v217/thunderbat/Chicago2006/USAF/bockscar_wide.jpg

a short bus ride over to the active base carries you to the experimental hangar...the centerpiece here is the supersonic XB-70 Valkyrie, which dwarfs everything else there...it literally reaches from the front door to the back wall...YF-12, X-29, X-1B and the X-15 are just a few of the rare birds stored here.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v217/thunderbat/Chicago2006/USAF/XB70wide.jpg

the Cold War hangar houses some monsterous aircraft and many of which I had toys of as a kid...one of my all time faves was the B-47 Stratojet...its rocket assisted takeoffs were just amazing...to stand so close to this rare and magnificent bird was thrilling.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v217/thunderbat/Chicago2006/USAF/B47wide.jpg

the F-117 Stealth fighter was there and a great laugh to my wife who joked,"where?...I can't see it"...thats her on the bench and she was such a great sport while I ran amok like a kid in the toy store.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v217/thunderbat/Chicago2006/USAF/F-117wide.jpg

the balcony overlooking the Cold War hangar was a great place to take in the view of this awesome collection of airpower...the B-2 stealth, the B-1B Lancer (love that one), the F-104 Starfighter, the awesome B-58 Hustler and the gigantic B-36 Peacemaker are just a sampler of the birth of the Strategic Air Command.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v217/thunderbat/Chicago2006/USAF/ColdWar_wide.jpg

more to come later...or check out the US Air Force museum website...lots of great pics!

On the way back from Abilene this afternoon, the wife actually suggested Chicago as a vacation destination for this year. She broke her foot while in Abilene but that's another story. I told her you just went there on your vacation and I'd show her your pics as soon as she's able to hobble over to the computer.
