Isn't this just an illusion? Like its really hard to see but the line in the middle is actually not straight and it throws everything off? They've just tried to hide it with thicker lines and what not?

Take two decks of playing cards. Make yourself an 8x8 square. Then try and make it a 5x13 it won't work.

The way they cut the squares gives them an extra. In reality the surface area is the same only the pieces are smaller.

Just look at the thickness of the lines in the second image. See how they are thicker? there is a slight overlap on each shape and together the sum of the overlap is one square
