Curious to see other peoples desktops.. I hope I'm not the only one with Dual Monitors If you don't know how to take a picture of your desktop hit the "Prt Scr" Button which is above your insert key (Ins) then open paint and paste it into paint and save then upload to an image site. Also thumbnails are a plus so no one with a slow computer gets pwnt. Anyways heres mine

Sorry no picture, but no cameras allowed in my work area. I'll see if I can find one we published on our website.

Nice, I plan on rebuilding a computer once I have extra cash to spend. Originally posted by 72chevman: Originally posted by Dthreap: Curious to see other peoples desktops.. Why does it not count, it is my desktop on the desk that I built. I also wired the room and server farm with 90% of cat6, fiber and AC Power. We were given a year to build this facility and have been upgrading and expanding ever since. We do 99% of the maintenance on 2nd shift. I can't find a picture that is accessable outside the .mil domain, but here is a public release on where I work. As for home, I hate computers. I check email, weather and my favorite sports teams. I have a 10 yr old computer still running Win200oPro with a 19" LCD. http://server.admin.state.mn.us/resource.html?Id=7810

Well a local news channel keeps an updated radar graphic on their website. The file name stays the same, and it updates every 5 minutes or so. So if you go to where you change your background, hit "customize desktop" at the bottom, hit the "web" tab at the top, hit "new" and paste in the URL you want of the image. OK out of those windows and it will show up on your desktop. You can resize it and move it around, then go back into the settings and check "lock items" or something like that, so it stays put. Sometimes it doesn't update the radar automatically so you have to right click anywhere on the desktop and hit refresh. Also, this is all dependant on if the radar image you choose has a non-changing URL and doesn't have fancy scripting of some kind. (weather.com images will work if you choose "classic maps" rather than the interactive one)

Because depending on what you want to use it can take up a decent amount of resources and if only have about 512MB ram (You prob need a new computer) it can become noticeably slow. Looks good. I built mine about 3 years ago. After I do some things to my car I plan on turning this one into a home media server and building a new one with Quad AMD Heres an old pic of mine (The ugly white dvd drive is out. Gf got me a lightscribe for my B-day ) And G15 Gaming keyboard FTW!

You must have to have one huge exhuast fan to keep up with all of those intake fans...

I've got a 120mm for exhaust, that's it.
Computer cases are supposed to operate with positive pressure, keeps the dust out.

There probably isn't enough heat generated that isnt taken care of by the heatsinks that you would need an extra fan in that case...meh idk though i could be wrong u could have better PSU, GPU, etc..

Thats alot of heat from the 6800...if I were you i would reccomend the 9800 when it gets cheaper. I have the 8800 GTS 640mb OC and i regret not getting a 9800.

With that proccessor theone if you got any aftermarket cooling id advise you to atleast get 3.2ghz out of it because that quad can handle newhere from 3.2-3.4ghz on air cooling. Mines sitting at 3.4ghz and I haven't had a single issue.

The term nerd / geek is a compliment these days. If somebody calls you that, they're really saying that you will live a more comfortable rest of your life than they will.

Seeing those temps is so alien to me.
My stuff idles at like 30C and when I crank up my clocks for gaming I'm suprised if it ever gets above 50C.
I need to OC my cpu more though. My AMD x2 4200+ is at 2.4Ghz IIRC and I'm sure I can get some more out of it. I just don't remember any of it anymore lol, been a while.
Clocking the X1900XTX though is real easy. Open AtiTool, select profile, click load. 700/800 and she'll idle around 36C and load down to about 52C

My Quad core is like an oven and isn't easy to keep cool at anything past 3.5ghz. If I went liquid im sure I could push 3.5ghz-3.8ghz with the Q6600. My temps at idle are about 45c...and on full load around 60c, anything higher and I would start to actually worry. Lone im suprised your temps are as high as they are with the setup you have.
With my system the heatpipe design on my motherboard that ASUS made wasn't good for overclocking so I did a slight mod to the mobo and deleted the heatpipes and replaced them with pure copper heatsinks that have fans on them and it dropped my temps majorly and increased my overclocking potential by around a good 25%.

I'm going to be doing a few mods myself actually.
The voltage regulator on my 1900 actually climes to 105C!!!! That's hot enough to boil water!
And with such a tiny heatsink it's no wonder. I'll be putting a larger heatsink set-up on it, and maybe even a fan.
My GPU draws 69 amps IIRC while she's under load. My only limiting factor is that voltage regulator. I'm worried that I'll fry it if I clock the GPU and higher. So for now, it will stay as is.
Mind you, that was when I was stress-testing the system so ACTUAL temps will never reach that high but still, that's hot.
Also, the Reserator V2 system is very powerful. It's entirely passive, save for the pump. And it's a small and rather quiet pump.
So 50C is quite reasonable for the flow and lack of active cooling.

I've been thinking about getting a water cooling system but I just dont know if I can trust it to cool my Q6600 @ 3.4ghz...I've heard of a couple that can cool dual cores and single cores but the quads produce so much heat it will cost me a fortune to get a Quad liquid cooler.

Do some research on peltier junction cooling. Not sure if theres any retail kits but DIY folks can do it. Hint: draw peltier power from separate 12v source.

The problem with peltiers is that you still need to remove that heat.
The one side get's really cold, great of overclocking.
But the OTHER side get's WAY WAY hot. And so you'll need heat sinks and piles of airflow to make sure you don't spike up the ambient temps to the point where everything ELSE overheats.
EDIT: And by seperate 12v source, he means grab an old PSU, a paper clip, and some electrical tape.

I have set my overclock back, just for fear of stability. I cannot set at 3.4ghz and run stable on air, my pc just limits me for some reason, I mean it can run for hours, but it wont be Pure stable like it is at 3ghz. 3ghz is still plenty fast for me and keeps temps reasonable. I'm actually sitting at a lil cooler then your pc lone, except i have the oven in mine lol. The 8800 produces so much heat and so does the quad that I really wish I had a better way to get rid of it. For some reason temps in the 60's just bugs my pc.

It runs a little slow, anyone know how I could speed it up a little?

Drop a new PC inside it. I've got a 486 Dx2 floating around the house somewhere, want it? I've done the OC game before and it always turn into a tiresome battle between stability, heat, and your wallet. I'm just fine with my 4600 x2 running at stock speeds. BTW, is it just me or is anyone else amazed at how big heatsinks are now? I remember when my Thermalright AX7 on my 1700XP was considered a big, heavy mofo. Now that is almost small compared to OEM coolers. I also remember when heat pipes just began to emerge. They were nowhere near as efficent as they are now.

OK, since I just got my laptop, I'm still setting things up. But here are the first two contenders:

Missing man formation, or something other like that.
I'm running XP on the desktop, Vista on the laptop.

Yes, that's the Missing Man formation.
2nd element leader pulls up to represent the lost soldier as the rest fly on.
However, around here, I've always seen them fly in formation and then one of them rolls and pulls away, instead of pulling straight up.
Also, the last time I saw it IIRC, every one of them rolled and pulled away from the lead plane in turn.

I ordered 2 92mm Vantec Tornado's. They move 119 CFM's and are crazy fans. One will go on my CPU cooler and one will go on my side of case. I'm pretty sure its going to lower temps by 10c-20c. I should be stable to go to 3.5ghz or 3.6 on air cooling.

Get a fan bus controller so you can slow them down when you're idling. I have a Tornado 80mm that I used to use on my old Athlon system. The high pitched scream that comes from them gets old quick.

I watched a video of the 92mm Tornado and I thougth they were kidding about the sound but I realise its LOUD. I did get a fan controller and reduced my order to 1 fan heh. I heard just the 1 fan can drop temps 10c.

Yes, it's the Missing Man formation, although I don't know why they would have just rolled away, lonezergling. Pulling up symbolizes his trip to the heavens...I hope it's not some more political correctness BS. And so far, I don't have any problems with Vista. When I get time to get in there and start tweaking settings, we'll see, but for just a regular every day user, I don't see why people don't like it.

I enjoyed vista for a solid 3-4 Months before it started to crap on me giving me errors and blue screens of death (could be fixed now with some of there service packs and updates?) but I just couldn't stand it so now im on Windows XP SP3. I may upgrade once they get things way stable.

I have hit 3.6ghz on Air cooling with my Q6600. It's quite amazing seeing all 4 cores at this speed...but theres nothing that really utilizes all the power unless im heaviley multitasking, gaming, or modelling in 3ds max.
