I know alot of people who take their rims off for the winter. I know that theres alot of salt and stuff on road that can get up on them but will that really harm them all that much? If you clean your veichle alot would you beable to keep them on without worrying? I mean is it really nessecary to take them off? I've heard rumors such as it will make chrome on your rims not shine anymore but if you get painted would you have to worry about that? I dont have any rims but I will probably be getting me some this spring and I've always been curious about that question.

Clean them up and put 1 or 2 coats of wax on and they should be fine.

It makes chrome rust, and peels clear off of other wheels, but its takes a while. Wax helps.

Where I live, in the mountains of East Tennessee, they put salt down at the first sign of snow, even if it only accumulates to an inch or two.
But the 25ยข car wash is always open and for a quarter you can get all four wheels sprayed off with that fairly strong water pressure, so my wheels are still in good shape in spite of going through 10 winters here.
When my sister had the car, and I took care of it for her, every fall I cleaned them real good with wadding polish, then put three coats of paste wax on them. I've done the same this fall now that the car is mine.
So I recommend (a) waxing the wheels real good and (b) keep the salt rinsed off with either your hose at home, or at the car wash.
James.

Hey "GPGTAlpine"...if You are Not planning on lowering Your GP, Why not hang-on to Your Stock 16"s & tires...& re-install them for the Winter...Why, run the Risk on Damaging the wheels, especially since they are usually so very Expensive?
I just bought some new ones...& I just can't Imagine taking that type of Risk, it's really not worth it...it's like throwing $$$$ down the Drain.
But, of Course...it's a Matter of choice, & I hope You don't find Yourself, in the position of having to buy new ones, after realizing that it wasn't a Good Idea!

I would highly recommend switching back to your stock wheels in the winter.
The salt and snow will take the clear coat off of nice rims and expose what's beneath to the elements. My rims took a hit last winter because I didn't remove them and only washed them occasionally. It's less risk and hassle to just switch them out with your stockers.

It Only makes Sense, Guys...Does Anyone here wear there Nices Dress shoe out in the Snow? It wouldn't make Sense, Right? Well, wheels are Expensive...& as long as You haven't lowered Your GP, Your stocks will go back on as if they were Never Off!
No one...would be paying Attention, to Your Ugly Stocks, in the Winter. Then in the Spring...You can Dress-up Your GP to make Her look Her very Best!
That's just My Opinion...but, if You have lots of $$$ to spend on Wheels, over & over...then let be...& buy New ones after the Winter. of !

As "HercMan" said...I too have painted my Stocks whenever they were looking Ugly. And, since it wasn't a professional job, after the paint starts to wear off from washing, I do it again.
Believe it...You Guys wouldn't be Sorry! And, the $$$ You wouldn't have to spend on New wheels, You could use it to do some other Upgrades.
I have just had my GP painted completely, to it's Original Color & it looks Great(Iridescent Gray)...& come Spring I will be putting on my New wheels & Tires, not Sure what tires to get as of Yet. But, I will find some Performance tires to Test those 18" wheels to see if I like the feel of them.
And, come Winter...on goes the Stocks!
