Yeah, yeah, I know. The Cammed/Intercooled M90 setup isn't what I want to do anymore, and as most of you have seen, I am selling all of it. New setup time: Holset HX52 Turbo Turbonetics Evolution Wastegate Greddy Type-RS BOV Frozenboost 31x11.75x3 IC Core Zex Wet Shot VS Cam (for now, maybe I'll go for the VS cam record HP) 80lb Injectors PRJ Walbro 255 Fuel Pump Custom Intake Manifold LS1 TB 85MM MAF (2001 LS1 Corvette) - Delphi 25168491 ZZP Gen 1 Fuel Logs -6AN Stainless Fuel Lines Z7 Crossover CXRacing Intercooler Piping w/ siliconeintakes.com couplers Front and Rear ZZP Powerlogs And the biggest, custom downpipe I can fit I just started piecing together the stuff earlier this week, and have everything in my possession except for the turbo which will be here next week. I will post up a couple of pics later, and will use this thread to keep everyone updated.

What about the trans? Not so much of a sinking ship as I really have wanted to do this for a while, and now have access to a welder, so I can save a ton of money. As for the trans... that's just something I'm going to act like isn't there. I'll just cross my fingers every time it shifts. lol

As long as you don't do burnouts all the time (or once with slicks :p ), launch it hard or spin the tires going around a corner your trans will hold up for quite a while.
Mine was at 15 psi daily and has the line pressure maxed due to a bad solenoid inside it and has had no problems whatsoever.
Really all you need is a stronger IS and maybe gearset/chain so save up for that and get one built for when the trans does eventually go, then you are only down 1 day swapping them out.
I'm excited to see this build, it's exactly what I would do if I were to do it all over again and wish I did do from the start. Would have had a much better and more reliable build for less money.

The only thing I really wish was changed is the VS cam. It WILL be a ST5 when the trans needs to come out. I will not be running slicks at all. I will launch it real light with no burnout. The thing that might get it is when it bangs into 2nd. The track times might not be all that impressive, but the traps should be pretty nasty with this turbo. They are pretty monsterous. (Not my pic, but this is the same model that I'm getting) Once the turbo stuff is in the car, and I can drive it, I will be buying a transmission along with a chain (15/16 or 1") along with an IS, some clutch packs, and some other small things. It will sit in my garage next to the ST5 cam until this transmission breaks.

Why can't you use existing setup and just throw on the turbo? Like the IC setup, and use blower for the intake? What about your Pacesetters?

1. No where near the room for another intercooler. 2. I would see little to no gain with a twincharged setup. 3. Do not need the headaches of tuning a twincharged setup.
Pacesetters are being hacked up and used as headers for the turbo.

I could be wrong but I think it is a turbo from a stock Eagle Talon. It looks about as small as my friends Audi 1.8t turbo.

the water/air intercooler isn't as effective as an air/air. It just shows how inefficient the cores are. A guy on CGP made 80whp more just going from a fullsize m90 intercooler to an air to air intercooler.
Corey built a custom intake, basically welded an LS1 tb to the l67 LIM. Looks good, should work pretty well.

That is an L67 lower intake manifold with the inlet mostly welded up. The big block with the round hole and 3 bolts sticking out of it is the LS1 throttle body adaptor. He is going to be bolting the LS1 tb to that so instead of the tb facing sideways like all other setup's it is facing up.
The coolant holes and PCV etc is all blocked off and he is doing a catch can for PCV I believe.
I'll let Corey give you the exact details but that is the gist of it.

You could easily make one that bolts to the trans bellhousing just below the crossover [/b]And that's why we keep you around. That is a real good idea that I think I might just have to use. Alpine- Randall pretty much summed it up. It is just an LS1 TB adapter plate welded directly on top of an L67 LIM. I will be running a catch can, so all of the other bolts will be tapped or welded shut.

50lbs...good gosh. Well at least you'll lose that much with the blower off the intake manifold.
How big is that turbo compared robthe one Steve last installed on the regal?

Has a vertical TB been done before or is this the first time anyone has attempted it?

Thanks Rick. It's coming along nicely. This week is going to be a very big week with the fabrication. I ordered a second Pacesetter front header to fab up a set of turbo headers with 1 3/4 turbo primaries. The intercooler is all mounted up, ordering the tubing for it this week.

Got the second front header in today. Flipping and rewelding the flange so that we can get it to meet at the collector just above where the transmission meets the motor.
The intake manifold idea is getting scrapped. New idea for the manifold should be done early next week, and will look real nice.

Who have absolutely no idea what you're doing with a setup like this. How many intake manifolds have you welded together? How many turbo kits have you made? I will be sure to address you every step of the way after this to make sure you don't let me make any mistakes.

You're always saying people can't take jokes. I was throwing in some sarcasm about addressing the board. You've heard worse from Fred. I just figured you wanted a fast car yet you'd like to be able to open the hood and be like here is the masterpiece. I really couldn't see you wanting that after you spent time and money building a sweet phenolic setup to rush and put a strange looking intake on there. Please Corey don't hate me.

Sorry to bring up an older post but I saw this at club gp: Ordonez would this work with what you are planning to do (this upper intake)? I know you were trying to experiment with the upper intake.. Maybe this would work, maybe it wouldn't, I have no idea?

Alpine, those upper hats aren't available any more and really do not do anything more than a gutted supercharger housing. You'll still be limited to the flow of the LIM on the l67 which isn't great and the w2a cores we have really hold you back compared to a nice w2a setup or even small a2a front mount.
Tbat, the lag time actually helps a little because it lets you get up to speed before you roast tires. Once the boost hits it spins hard unless you feather the throttle. I will have to get a video up to show what 1/2 throttle and only 15 psi will do to heavy 18" rim's....

Maybe you could find a way to remove the LIM and have something like what that guy did in pic above to replace it? Just another thought.

My intake will be one piece. The upper manifold is welded directly onto the LIM. It has changed a bit in the design from the previous setup, but I like this new design a lot more. It is a once piece setup that allows for no boost leaks anywhere. I might be able to get some pics up as soon as the final welding of the TB flange is done.
Tbat- These Holsets are supposed to spool ridiculously quick for their size, and should get the job done. It is a big turbo, though, so who knows?
A bit of an update also, I am wiring up the turbo timer today along with the nitrous switches. Got the oil feed line tee'd in and the Racetronix/Walbro 255 fuel pump in the tank (Finally). It is seriously just as slow as the supercharged setup. Now I see why people just spend the money and buy kits that make things easy.

So you've got the turbo running? Or what do you mean by as slow as the s/c setup?

I assume he meant just as slow to put together, hence the comment about buying a kit.

that is a sweet looking piece of engineering! I wonder how effective a twin scroll turbo would be? Fabbing up the header pipes in order to pair the cylinder pulses to each side of the turbine inlet would be a royal pain, but the Porsche engines that use it make crazy power with minimal lag time. Hyundai's new direct-injected turbo four uses a twin scroll and is thumping 274hp from 2.0L (along with 269 ft/lb torque @ 4500) I know DI and quad valves contribute to those figures but it is a 75hp boost over the stock 2.4L DI engine. A good flowing custom intake manifold (like Chris posted) along with a properly plumbed twin scroll w/a2a IC would be real trans killer

You would be surprised how nice of a vacuum you get in a FMIC setup, as long as there are no boost leaks :p

Chris, that is the next step. We already have the design made up, but it's a lot of money in fabbing and metal, so that will come when the head gaskets blow and I throw the ST5, ported heads, 130's, and head studs in there.

That does make some good sense Corey to eliminate boost leaks doing it that way, as long as it doesn't interfere with changing things and getting to stuff.

The only real bolts that we have to wary of are the LIM bolts, which isn't much of a problem as long as you plan around it. The TB flange will be even easier to get to then the stock one, as it should be out by itself away from everything.

If your worried about boost leaks just weld all the pipes together and use only 4 couplers i.e from the turbo, into the ic, from the ic, to the tb. To be honest though with long enough couplers that aren't garbage you shouldn't leak.
And on the tb flange im assuming it isn't directly mounted to you intake mani anymore and that you placed it further away?

Not much of an update, but I mounted the turbo timer in the center console. (I know, I know, cool story bro) Edit: Almost forgot, I also finished up the wiring and such in the trunk.

What sort of shot are you running Corey? Wet/dry?
I've been looking into a nitrous kit, just dont even know where to look for parts for a budget build.

I got huge injectors in plans of running a dry shot, but don't need them with the wet kit, so I'm going to be able to run e85 when it becomes available around here. I got the kit for $375 shipped on clubgp in the for sale section.

You're going to need one killer ass tune bro. Not some backyard change some tables street tune. What are your boost plans? How much cfm per psi does that thing push? Really consider the setup dude before you spray it.
Your build but id try to push as much as I could out of the turbo before spraying it with that much. Your going to be creeping up a dangerous road dude.
GL with the trans aspect too. Shit is no longer cheap where you're going. And take it from me swapping stock trans every time is NOT worth it.

I know, the tranny is a scary thought, but I'm going to be buying a bad one and rebuilding it with the best parts available to me while I wait on this one to grenade. Once the tranny goes, I will be going with the ST5, 130's, etc.
The tune is going to be a lot of work, but I think I can handle it. The spray isn't going to be coming for a while, it's just there so I can be ready when I'm not happy with it anymore. I think I'll be happy with the Holset without nitrous for a while.

ST5 is great but if your going to do head work id see if Matt could get you the grind specs on their higher race cams.
Sucky thing is there are no best parts because they haven't found a way to retrofit the chains available yet...
The setup looks promising dude have fun with it. I'd do meth before doing nitrous imo. Lots safer and will make more power without dropping a chunk of change everytime you refill lol.
I'm glad someone is going for big power again lol.
I miss my gp but ill live my dreams of 500whp in a gp through this one lmao.

I miss my gp but ill live my dreams of 500whp in a gp through this one lmao. Pick up a cheap GP and build it like this. I'm going to be picking up a cheap set of heads and porting them myself, along with the transmission and doing it myself, but the hard parts alone on these things aren't cheap. As for the chain, I'm aware, but hopefully someone figures something out by the time I'm ready to go.

Welder went by my house today so I didn't have to drive home for a quick test fit. The rear header is ready to go, and the y-pipe to the turbo should be done early next week, along with the intake manifold.
So in a few weeks when I head home it should be ready to go through some final mounting.
Then it's onto the downpipe and the intercooler piping.

Well, this has turned into another one of my never ending projects.
Still waiting on machine time for the TB flange on the intake manifold. Should be able to get some exhaust work done next weekend.
Hopefully it's only a few more weeks.

Uh oh... apparently a downpipe is necessary, lol. We have no room for it with these custom headers.
Gotta figure something out...
In other news, the intake manifold is done, just finished mounting it for the first time. It fits great and looks good, too. It will go on permanently Monday night or Tuesday.
Going to be ordering some aluminum for the intercooler stuff this week.

where doesn't it fit? It won't fit anywhere, even with the smaller brake booster... The rear headers take up the entire spot where the DP would normally go. I will take some pictures tonight/tomorrow to try and get some ideas.

Track or street car? Nvm I had a very bad idea lol You ever think about rotating the turbo? Having the exhaust facing the headlight? Not the nicest looking setup but it fixs that issue. I know of 2 people who did a setup like that. They had to add an extra flex but it worked. Just sayin its an option. My other idea was much more extreme

Curious.
I wonder who has the longest running turbo out there.

either youre gonna have to scrap the rear header for a more compact set-up or you may have to exit the exhaust through the fenderwell behind the front tire. No, scratch that, you'll be too close to the incoming fuel lines. Turbo zoomie stack going thru the hood?

Intake manifold is bolted in for the final time as of earlier tonight. Looks great, pics tomorrow.
Gonna clean up some wiring mess tomorrow, too.
Gotta do an LIM job on a 3400 tonight. Yuck.

Even with what Chris said it is so much more work than just redoing the rear header.

Since were on the turbo topic, is it possible to run a single turbo with an A2A FMI without having a passenger side TB? Ive always wondered, That would be a TON of plumbing.

The M90 can only take you so far. Even the hybrid M112 hits a wall early. If I was building the ultimate track car I'd go turbo as well. For street use fun stuff etc I'll keep the S/C. Love the instant low end torque plus it just looks cool.

Yes, but you can make just as much, probably more since you can have a better intake, with a turbo only.
And it's not nearly as hard or complicated as twin-charge.

pretty much. for the most part, supporting mods and reducing pulley diameter will be more than ample to hold your own on the street, and, if you stay off the happy pedal, might even increase your fuel mileage.

And this project is back underway a bit as I got a break from school until the middle of January and then graduation. So I have to get moving on this.
Ordered front and rear powerlogs along with a Z7 crossover through the For Sale section of ClubGP. Also ordered a kit to finish the intercooler piping.
All that is left (I think) is the downpipe.

The vinyl is a PITA. I'm not sure what I'll do with that. Once I get it running I might try to find a better material to wrap it with, as this stuff sucks to work with.
BTW, that Matt Berger guy is impossible to get a hold of. lol. I have all of the intercooler piping and the hot side piping except his part (rear plog) that I can't seem to track down.

Intercooler piping is just about done. Wiring is all cleaned up and tucked away nicely. The front powerlog is on with the crossover sitting there ready for the rear powerlog that should be here next week along with some silicone couplers to finish up the piping.
I guess it's progress.
I think I'm gonna order some projectors for it, too. Any of you guys have a preference? I really don't want them to have any amber in them, but I don't know anything about them.

It's gonna be a dog when out of boost. Big turbo, small runner length...
Jeeeeeez these downpipes are such a tight fit, eh? With my engine/trans spacers and shortened dog bones with the 3" pipe, it rubbed on the master cylinder and wore a large groove in it.
Also, it boiled over my brake fluid once.... that's with exhaust wrap and blanket.

Just updating this thread so I can have all my info in here. Vacuum Setup PCV Setup And one teaser. She was supposed to be on the road this weekend, but the exhaust guy is all backed up to make the downpipe. Hopefully soon... *sigh*

I melted 2 rear valve covers after dp coating and wrap. You're telling me. It's killing me since it is so close now. The DP is gonna be custom, so we shall see how tight it is. The V-band on the back is like 4.5 inches, so we are going to have to reduce it (hopefully not too much) and then throw a cutout on the bottom. Nope. I'm actually on spring break this week but stuck at work. I might get some time to play with it this weekend to get all of the injector tables and MAF tables loaded into the PCM. And then hopefully figure out the brakes on this stupid thing.

I hope you can make it work bud. I can't see a pipe larger than 3" in diameter ever fitting between the booster and valve cover. Vibrant makes some great reducers and vband flanges. I used them when experimenting with the S372. All in all good luck and have fun.

No way you'll fit anything bigger than 3" between there. Even if you do have the room between the booster and valve cover, you'll start to hit the master cylinder. Even my 3" rubbed a huge divot in the master, but that was with spacers. But you see my point.
I posted a little about your PCV question on CGP.

I figured 3" would be the biggest I could fit. I was hoping to keep it at 3" if not maybe just a little bit bigger.

I'm taking all of this in... I really want a turbo setup but first things first.
Hope you get it running man. Still can't get over the size of that turbo.

Hope you get it running man. Still can't get over the size of that turbo. Yeah. If I had to go back and do it all again, I would buy a kit. So much simpler and all of the guesswork/headaches are really frustrating. I have enjoyed building it, and am glad I did it this way as I have learned a lot.

So much simpler and all of the guesswork/headaches are really frustrating. I have enjoyed building it, and am glad I did it this way as I have learned a lot. Way cheaper, so many used kits pop up every winter season. Honestly best route is to grab a used kit off cgp. Fun as hell but if your anything like most of us gear heads it gets slow and then you mod more and then you make it to the point where its serious money to stay reliable. Last time I checked ZZP still hasn't come out with a 1" replacement they were working on. I took a hammer at my monte booster to nack the pipe in better lulz. I was thinking of using the wilwood booster eliminator kit that uses a distribution block instead but eh not worth it really lol.

If I ever get this car driving right... I'm so going to turbo it. I've got my own welder and I'm not looking for crazy fast. I'll end up just copying ZZP's Z3 kit. Stock manifolds, mount the flange on the crossover, etc. I'll throw 1.9s on it, do some small things like that. I'm not going the cam route again. lol
