looks like a nice canvas to start with. Welcome to the site! You'll find some really useful info here with some very helpful and friendly people. Enjoy your stay!

Is that the airbox about mid-way up the driver's diagonal brace (immediatly under the canister-looking thing)? What's right behind the driver's headlight? The windshield washer bottle? That bay just looks...odd.

What're your plans for that thing? How'd a Briton end up with a GP? How many miles? er, Klicks, sorry.

Again, welcome. Enjoy the stay. Post pics as often as you can.

I can't see the pics at work but welcome

Rick that bottle behind the headlight is the coolant overflow bottle. 97-98 had that awful thing.

yes on the 98 the airbox is midway up under the diagonal brace and the reservoir behind the drivers side headlight it for the radiator instead of up by the passenger strut mount like in newer models

Hi everyone, and thanks for the welcome!

My 1998 GT was originally bought from Sam Leman in the USA in 1998; from new. It changed hands and ended up over here at a military base, owned by a serviceman. It changed hands again, twice I think, before I got hold of it in October this year! It's got 117,000 on the clock.

4 days after I picked it up, a coolant elbow fractured, and there was also a leak from the intake manifold gaskets. I had all these parts replaced, using upgraded gasket kits and Delco elbows. Also had the muddy Dexcool flushed out, and "normal" coolant put in! Runs sweet now, and no leaks!!!

Still needs a few little jobs to bring it up to scratch; heater resistor (only works on 5) and a replacement original radio if possible, so that I can use the steering wheel controls again. That last one can wait, as it has a radio that works ok at the moment. As I'm unemployed I have to budget accordingly!!!

The engine bay layout is correct for the handbook that came with the car; were other models very different?

Up until September I was driving a Cadillac Seville STS, but wrote it off in an accident! I was looking for a Grand Prix 3 years ago, but then the Caddy came along and the rest is history!

Welcome to the site!

Nice choice on flushing out the dexcool. That's what killed your gaskets in the first place.

The airbox changed in 99. That's what the confusion is about. The 97-98's have the bottle in front of the airbox, and the 99+ cars have it on the pass. side strut tower.

I had to do a bit of research on the net in order to order the right parts, and that's how I found out about the Dexcool/gaskets problem. The new Fel Pro gaskets seemed to be the best ones to go for.

These are the ones that came out!!! No wonder they leaked coolant.

My GT is standard apart from the radio, tuning parts are either non-existent or too expensive to import (at the moment anyway!). Still got the original dealer badge on the trunk; see pics. Car has graphite cloth interior.

Welcome aboard! cheers The LIM gaskets are a common problem on the 3800 engines, and I've seen them fail at less than 100,000 miles, even with green antifreeze in the engine. Haven't had any problems since installing the aluminum gaskets... hammer

As for the steering wheel controls: did you know that Crutchfield sells a convertor box that plugs into the radio wiring harness and the aftermarket radio to regain the ability to use the thumb buttons. I wanna say it's the PAC box or something. Do a search here and you should find it.

Thanks for the info on the steering wheel radio controls. One of the previous owners butchered the dash to fit a different radio, so I want to replace it sometime, either with an original or a better one. Won't be until after Christmas now though, as "Santa" has got to spend some money on presents!!!
