ive noticed my tranny pan is leaking so ive decided when i replaced the filter of course im gonna put new fluid in. the tranny has 153k miles on it, i bought it (cheap) with 147k. i dont know when the last time the tranny fluid was changed or flushed or even if its the original. what im asking though is whether or not i should get it flushed prof. or changed the fluid myself? btw its a 2000 gt.

I've heard flushing trannies that are especially that old can cause big problems. Probably wanna go with a fluid change. I'm about to do one.

Yeah, change, don't flush. Do a search on this site I remember lots of posts about this maybe 6-12 months ago. In fact, I think I asked the same question.

I'd say go with either a WIX filter or go to the dealer. You don't want to skimp on something as important as your transaxle. By the way, the guys are right about not flushing such a high mileage car. You may inadvertently cause a leak that wasn't there before or even worse, compromise the integrity of the trans.

On a trans with that many miles, and not knowing if the trans fluid was EVER changed, I wouldn't even change it at all. If it starts to slip after changing it out, you'll know why.

Perform the filter change and the fluid you have to add in will dillute the left over enough so you shouldn't have any problems.

Here's a step by step. As for fluid use the proper Dexron or it's synthetic equivalent.

it could be the original tranny... as long as it was cared for right it should still run fine!
