Issues with remote.

I'm fixing to order a new remote for my car. It has never worked since i have owned it. I have went through all the steps, took it apart to check the battery voltage and the chip has broke off the board. So with that said..

Are the remotes year specific?? I've noticed a few on ebay have a few different number types.. Any help would be greatly appreciated.. The car is a '99

Just go on ebay and look for a 99'

Youll save 150 $ from the stealership by doing it yourself in 3 minutes.

Are the remotes all universal other than having to program them to your car?? What i mean is, Is there something in the VIn possibly which determines which remote code you would need?

What year is your car. 97-2000 had different style remotes. 01-03 had different remotes then the 97-2000, so I think it does matter. I ordered mine off ebay with the year specific of my car and has been working good for 6 months so far.
