Dude, I'm not dogging your car, as I own one, all I'm saying is, 99% of V-8 cars will eat your lunch. how about a GTP? with $500 in it they both are equal cars both have a good aftermarket backing. the GP is alot better looking though and the GP is GM so its alwasy gonna be #1

all things driver being the same (weight, experience, fatigue, health) between a pony GT and a GP GTP stock, wouldnt the stang have the GP due to power:weight ratio? Our cars are right about 3500 lbs. Arent the Stangs just a touch under 3k?
What kind of net gains can you acheive with equal amounts of money spent? Say...give the both pony and GTP 5 large...who can get the most performance gains?
I understand that perfect conditions like these mostly NEVER exist, but humor me.

With 5 grand, I would say the Mustang. With 5 grand in a Gp you could get Cam, heads, intercooler, and not to bad tranny. And run high 12s low 13s with something like 300-350WHP. With s stang and 5 grand you can throw a wipple kit on it and put out 450RWHP and run 12s. I beleve when I was looking at Mustangs with 5 gradn you can get the rouch stage 2 kit and it says it iwll give you 425-450RWHP. Now with equal everything (driver wise) I would say Stang.

You say he has an 2001 R mustang. Are you sure? Ford made a 2001 Cobra R which listed over $50K. There was no such R model in 02. They make a Gt and a Cobra. No stangs are not under 3000 pounds. Most V-8 cars are about 3400, V-6 cars about 3200. Below specs are taken from Car & Driver or Road & Track 2001 Mustang GT 3240 lbs, 260 HP, 302 TQ 0-60 in 5.5 1/4 mile 14.1 2001 Mustang Cobra 3430 lbs, 320 HP, 312 TQ 0-60 in 4.8 1/4 mile in 13.5 I could not find specs for a GT so here is a GTP 2001 GTP 3428 lbs 0-60 6.8 1/4 mile 15.1
Also, remember how flat a TQ curve is on a V-8 compared to a V-6, and how soon it reaches it peak.
Here would be my under $5K build.
AFR heads $1400, performance engine rebuild with N2O cam $600, 125 HP N20 $500, 3.73 rear gears $200, custom tune $200, fiberglass hood $300, clutch $300 and low 12 sec pass on the bottle, high 12s with no bottle, with lots of cash left.
OR stock motor, paxton supercharger $2800, clutch $300, 373 gears $200 low 12s
This discussion could go on forever. Face it, we all bought a GP for a reason, if it was because we wanted the fastest car out there, we were wrong. I bought mine cause the $$ was right and I liked it. No it is not fast like my chevelle, mustang or VTX, but it gets 28 mpg+ on highway trips and carrys three kids to school with backpacks and music instruments.
Just stay safe out there and enjoy lining up every so often with other cars. It is all fun and games til someone gets hurt.

Hmmm.. I never even thought about having a go at a Moustang GT. Just makes common sense that cars of a similar weight, but the the Ford having about an extra 85 horsepower, why bother being embarassed?
Now if I had a supercharger & a few mods, that might be a different story.
My favorite lunches are Camry and Accord V6s, Civics with a coffee can exhaust.
When I want to go out Mustang GT hunting, I climb in the Malibu. C'mere, horsey.

So much hating.
Saying 99% of V8s would eat us is a huge stretch. A GT, yes. A GTP, no. No one said they were the fastest thing on earth, but we do need to get a little credit, since the V8 bigdogs like to take it so much. And stock for stock, it's a mostly fair game for an underrated car like the GP. Don't throw mods in the mix, it only makes for flamebait, be reasonable.
Besides, the power gap between V8 and V6 nowadays appears to be shrinking. There are multiple V6s now that approach and exceed 300HP with no forced induction. It's a grayer line than it used to be.
