i have recently purchased a 97 GTP. it has about 82,000 miles on it. i was reading around on the forum and i read that i need to change the SC oil and coupler regularly. there is a rattle noise at idle and goes away under throttle. i read that this is due to wear of the coupler. i was just wondering how to change the coupler and oil? could i due this myself with some mechanical knowledge or do i have to go to a mechanic? and where would i purchase the coupler and oil? i am new to the forum so any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Welcome!

The SC oil can be changed using a turkey baster or whatever you can find to extract the SC oil out of there.

S/C oil can be purchased from the dealer, coupler from www.zzperformance.com
The S/C oil will be about the nastiest thing you've ever smelled, so beware. I think it's schedule is about every 30k miles.
Can't give you any other info on the coupler, I've still got my original with 98k miles on it.

Welcome and post up some pics when you can.

Also, i was wondering what type of fuel you guys use on the SC motor. I owned a turbo protege before i bought the GTP, that required premium. I asked the salesman i bought the GTP from and he said i could get away with regular. I just figured that with forced induction you need a higher grade fuel. So should i go with 93? or could i use 87?

I would stay with the high grade. If you end up getting a PCM later on you WILL need to stay with high grade.
If the high price of gas is on your mind, think about this... it cost less than $3 per tank full for the difference between low grade and high grade. Well worth it for me.

Regarding S/C oil, you need two bottles for one change.

Hello,

SC coupler is a snap.
Drain the SC oil as mentioned above.....
You need to take the belts off, and loosen the alternator to get the snout off of the blower.
Make sure you get all of the bolts, and try to remove the snout, while leaving the "spacer" in place. The "spacer" is what holds the rotors in place. Not a big deal if it comes out, just makes a bit more of a job to get the rotors back into position.
ZZP sells a quality replacement.

Later now,
Clint

Premium fuel is really important on s.c. cars. It is important in reducing the knock retard that you hear so much about on this site. The higher octane is definatly necessary especialy if you add a pully or other performance parts. And as Austin pointed out its only about three dollars more a tank for extra performance. Well worth it.

Welcome. Just a quick note before you buy the coupler. First take the s/c belt off (you will need a 15 mil. socket or wrench for the tensioner) and using your thumb, forefinger, and middle finger hold the s/c pulley and lightly jiggle it. If there's freeplay it may be bearing failure. I just replaced my entire s/c with a brand new one and compared the two before I put the new one in. The old one had freeplay while the new one didn't have any. Just something to think about before assuming it has to be the coupler.

Mike, I think that sounds more like a bad coupler than it does bearings.
I hope you didn't have the dealer diagnos that problem for you.
