City MPG is all about how you drive. You need to accelerate slower and look ahead. You will learn to back off teh throttle sooner and still get to the next red light. Yeah I get people riding my back bumper for the last 50-75 ft before we stop, but why should I continue to be on the gas until I have to break. Also leave for work or any other appt 5 minutes earlier. That way you are not tempted to push your speed or race thru the yellow/red light.

Liek others have said, tires should be 32-35 cold, empty the extra crap out of your trunk. Never try and accelerate up a hill if you can help it.

I have also found that my car will lock up in OD at 43MPH. If I can set my cruise in town, I will. The car will stay in 4th gear.

I like filling up at this gas station at the top of the hill and reseting my mpg. it'll read up in the 40's by the bottom of the hill. Then it's back to reality where i get 18-23 depending on how pissed off i get on the road durring that tank. I drove staring at the gauge one tank and adjusted my driving to make the numbers go up. I got a tank to average out at 28 mpg. That was mostly highway never breaking 55 or going over 2500 rpms unless needed. Amazing mpg, but driving that slow drove me insane.

I noticed yesterday I've lost 4th gear in my trans. frown Interestingly, it doesn't seem to have really hurt my gas mileage, and the 2900rpm @ 70mph has REALLY improved the noise level inside the car. So freaking quiet in comparison. Cruising at 70 in 3rd gear I was getting 26mpg on a flat road. Makes me wonder how much the OD really helps us. Must be very poorly tuned from the factory, should kick down at lower load than it does.

At 70 on a flat road I can get 34 mpg so you tell me how much it helps or hurts?

You need some maintenance and/or tuning. I would say all city driving, you should be at minimum 250 per tank, 15.5-16 gallons used. It is in the way you drive to. Actually pay attention to how you drive. Accelerate like there is an egg between your foot and the gas pedal, and tell the other drivers to go around. Have your tires inflatted properly.
Before a tune, I was getting 260 max in a tank on mixed driving. Then a tune came along, and I was pushing 350-370, more highway than city.
I have seen my mileage drop recently on the highway due to probably untuned in a month or two and the ethanol in the fuels.

That's why I make a little sacrifice in the wallet, because it helps keep me sane. lol

I live in heavily congested Northern NJ, and the MPG is in the 19-22 range. Have no idea on the tank, since I rarely fill it.

Theres no way for me to extrapolate from your example to mine. However, if you were to reset your DIC on the freeway after forcing the tranny to 3rd, you would have a valid comparison (34 mpg w/ OD, x mpg w/o)

Well in 4th at 70 Im just a hair over 2,000 rpms. So 800+rpms is quite the difference when it comes to mileage.
