Will have the car for one whole month on October 22nd. Have not made first payment. I go to leave my street tonight, and my transmission will not shift out of first gear. I changed the fluid to High Mileage about 2-3 weeks ago after I first got it. Fluid looks fine - level is touching bottom of full mark. It shifts perfect into reverse, neutral, park, drive. No matter where I put it D-3-2-1, it will not shift out of first now.

What it did do - after it warmed up, it will start to go, then hold back, then start to go again with steady pedal pushed without moving my foot.

My father tells me to check it for a leak in the vacuum modulator hose (if it even has a modulator). He says I should add some lucas before I take it to the tranny shop.

Can anyone over me insight?

Your GP doesn't have a vacuum modulator, if it's doing that, then I hate to say it, but it sounds your transmission is gone. It might, could, maybe be some kind of speed sensor...

Gone as in needs rebuilt, or a new tranny?

By the way - almost to 93,000 miles.

sounds like its shot. I had to get my trans rebuilt about a month and a half after I bought my car. Warranty picked up most of it but I would of rather had it not go out. A rebuild is gonna cost around $1500.

I don't believe the lemon laws here in PA apply to used vehicles.

This is only one of many many problems i've had with this car in a month. I thought I got a good deal on the car with what I paid, but its slapping me in the face right now. LoL.

Sunday I will have had the car for one month.

The general manager at the dealer made the quote to me "If you drive an as-is car home from a pennsylvania dealership and it falls into two pieces before you make it home, you call two tow-trucks and deal with it"

No warranty. 92,200 miles on it when I bought it. With my trade-in (1995 Beretta Z26 w/ 101,000 miles on it), I went out the door for $3800 (which included tax and title). Price of the car itself with trade came in at like 3300. I couldn't pass it up (well wish I would have).

Another victim of the "as is" clause, which is dealerspeak for "needs work". Always have a car checked out by a mechanic you trust before buying a car; if the dealer refuses to let you do that, walk away from it.

I know a guy who bought a new vehicle from a dealer that turned out to be a lemon; was given the runaround by the dealer. Finally the guy got so mad he'd park the vehicle in front of his store, decorate it with bags of lemons and a big sign declaring where the vehicle was purchased from. The dealer took the truck back, gave him his money, and he's driving a GMC now. laugh

Guys the best scenario possible came!

I babied the car in first gear up to the Transmission shop. I told him the symptoms.

Two hours later he calls me back. He scanned it, got a PTC? sensor code. He investigated and found that I had a harness unplugged. It was a PTC sensor or something to that sort. He cleaned the plug and terminals (since it looked like it was off for a good while) and took the car for a ride. He said the car shifted fine. He took it a few miles and saw no problem. It costed me a little less than $80.00.

I drive the car away, and my goodness, that thing shifts like a dream! I can't even feel it change gears. It shifts better than it ever has!!

I'm happier than anything right now!

Yep...just awhile back with my car, it looked like I needed a new radiator...it appeared to have a hole. So the shop owner looked at it and said it needed a new radiator. He took a close look, tightened up the upper radiator hose, then replaced my radiator cap, and then it held pressure fine and saved us over 200bucks. Just have to find the right places.

Yes, there are still some good shops out there. A customer of ours once brought in his company car for an anti-freeze leak, after bringing it to the dealer seven times to find the same leak. It turned out to be the water pump gasket; the customer gave us the go ahead to replace the pump as well. The service manager at the dealer accused us of "over repairing" the car. I guess we should have had the customer return six more times...
