Ok my mom has a 99 GT 4 Door. She has 48,xxx miles on it and the steering rack is shot. Has anyone heard of this at all with this few miles. My 98 GT has double those miles and no probs. Just wondering.

What are the symptoms? I had an 86 Olds whose steering rack had bum bushings in it and it would bind up when cold or bind if turned too quickly even when warm. A really dangerous situation. I lived (luckily) with that situation FAR longer than I ever should have. Had a rebuilt unit put in, and the steering worked better than it ever had, even when new.

It steers fine....but its makes noises. like whining grinding noises...

I am mainly wanting to know why @ 48,xxx miles it is going out..if anyone has heard of this let me know.

Hey Evil my 98 gtp is doing the same thing. If I'm parked with the car running and turn the wheel back and forth it makes a clunking sound (almost like a shot tie-rod) Anyway I called my buddy who works at a auto recycler and he told me they go like hot cakes. He has at least 2-4 calls a week for them. And now he's geting one for me. He also told me they are a bugger to install and that u should change all the tie-rods when you do it (inners and outers) Hope this helps!

Oh ya forgot to tell ya My car has 102,000 km around 60,000 miles. Seems like the engineers at gm have done there jobs and made things on this car to last just as long as the warranty

I don't know about the grinding sound, but the knocking sound may just be the bolts are loose on the rack. Get a pry bar when the car is raised and attempt to push the rack back and forward. This was what mine was doing. If it is grinding but it is steering good, it may be the tie rods ends or actually the pump. Get under the hood and let someone turn in and see where the noise is comming from.
