So I finally decided and bought a 3.5 inch press-on from ZZP. I was too poor and lazy to get the MPS and PCM with the 3.4 in. and am wondering can I still use the stock belt?
Thanks

Yes, you can still use the stock belt.

I'd highley suggest a PCM, 3" D/P and U-bend delete to go along with that pulley.

I have a K&N CAI and U-Bend delete. The 3.5 is the only pulley that doesn't require hardly any mods. When downsizing to the 3.4 though...thats when u need the DP, PCM, colder plugs, and t-stat.

You still need more mods than that... I know brian from the local club wont install your pulley unless you get a PCM

Then how come the GTX ran with a 3.5 inch and only had Ram Air and a SLP exhaust?

They ran it, because it's possible but not 100% safe. I'm not saying you're gonna blow up your car right after you put it on... but your car's PCM will pull timing in order to reduce the pre-detonation you will get with that smaller pulley, and there's a good chance the car will not be much if any faster.

The basic theory behind modding any motor is getting more air in and more air out. With the 3.5" pulley you'll be putting more air into the motor than you can get out with stock manifolds and downpipe.

It's whatever you want cause it's your car. But you'll probably have to do your own pulley install unless you get a PCM and 3" D/P. Go ahead and ask him (Brian) if he'll help you out but don't be surprised when he says no.

im still not convinced about the SLP car. 3.5 is way too small for minimal mods like that. I know it had some sort of tuning, but i would like to see a scan of that car. it had to be knocking

I agree... most GTP's come from the factory with a small amount of knock, even with the factory 3.8" pulley. GM engineers decided on a 3.8 for a reason, and that's because it's safe to use on a daily basis.

If it's so bad then how come three years ago no one was having issues with just the basic mods and running a 3.4? Yes they were getting 3*-5* of KR but that was acceptable for DDing. Now that a powertuner is readily available people are getting way too conservative.

A 3.5" pulley with minimal mods is okay, like a can of beer.

Add more supporting mods and it's better, like a bottle of fine brandy.

I guess I'd rather be safe than sorry, is what it boils down to. There was a GTP motor at my local machine shop, it used to have a 3.5" pulley on it, and the #5 piston was gernaded.

Some people may have no problems with minimal supporting mods... while other chip pistons. Some cars are KR monsters and some aren't. That alone is enough proof for me...

I ran a 3.4 with just an intake, plugs, wires, ubend and straight pipe resonator for awhile. But I've since read alot, learned alot, access to a PowerTuner, and Wiser. Couldn't tell you how much knock I had but I am still kicking and have since add supporting mods and much Tuning. With supporting mods I was getting 6*.

I agree. It's ideal to have no KR, but some people are too conservative.

for my DD I am not going WOT very often.

my car has 1-2* right now. And that is enough for me. I dont think you can be too conservative when i comes your motor. if i were to chip a piston, that would mess everything up. (school, job, social life, etc). 6* of knock is way too much. Losing a piston is not worth the few extra pounds of boost for me.

Well put it this way it may not be necessary to run a colder thermostat and plugs and a pcm to run a 3.5 it would certainly be safer and you would get the full benifit of the increased boost.Chico.
