Hey guys, I searched and only found one post referring to this.

I've got rust-through on my rear strut towers. It's a 97 GTP.

The rust is on the "outer" section, I guess that would be called the outer wheel housing? There is a seam weld and it's rusting from that point out. From looking at it, it doesn't look like it's part of the structure of the frame, but I really can't tell. It looks to me like the trunk and the inner half of the strut tower are part of the unibody frame, and then the outer wheel well is just a panel that's welded on to complete the wheel well. The actual structure that the struts are bolted to seems intact.

Is that correct as you guys understand it?

I've been planning on replacing the springs and struts soon anyway, I figured when I get them out, I'd take a wire wheel and remove all the rusted stuff. I figure I'd then either get someone to weld in patches, or maybe even use some fiberglass + resin to bridge the gaps, and then cover it with a healthy dose of undercoating.

Thoughts?

What ever you decide to do get ALL the rust off and hit the bare metal with some corrosion inhibitor prior to covering/painting.

Make sure you get the rust off of there.
