I would like to know what most of you would do. Dropped of my wife's GT at the stealership this morning because her boots on the R&P were torn. probably had been that way a couple months. Also her ABS light was on as well.

I finally get a call at 5:38 this afternoon from the service guy telling me, $1,600 for the rack & pinion replacement and another $650.00 for Wheel Hub/ABS sensor. I told him I'd discuss it with my wife and call him back. After coming onto the site and checking out the write up on it, it doesn't look too bad, I know I could do it, but do I really want to spend all day on this job. I called back about 10 min later and everyone's gone, mad so we'll have to wait until tomorrow morning to get her car. I know we here at GPN don't mind paying to get work done, but getting ripped off is another thing. What do you guys think I should do pay, or fix it myself?

Thanks,
Jack

Take it to a shop instead of a dealership if you don't do it yourself. Preferably one where you can supply your own parts. Hub is $100, install shouldn't be more than $200. I would guess the rack would be a similar discount over dealer prices, 50% or so.

Hub is a pretty easy job I would do that one myself. Rack, dunno.

Both can be done in a day. I would definately take it to an independant shop. You have to ask your self if your day is worth the price to have it done.

Me and another friend replaced the steering rack, I bought a used one from Ed morad.

That was a PITA.

But honestly, The leaky rack was more of a nuisance than anything. Nothing got worse.

Thanks for all of your replies. I am going to look online for a good shop and call in the morning. I can't get over how these people always tell you the cost as if you're too stupid to know their prices are waaay high. lol

Thanks,
Jack

expect parts to be twice what you can get them for and labor at $80/hr. If it's more than that, definitely stay away.

http://www.grandprix.net/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=008919#000000 Here is the writeup. If I remember right the rack and pinion was only around $200 and did the replacement myself in about a day.
