Can you use any pulley for the supercharger? Like a 3" steel idler pulley from the auto parts store? This might be a stupid question but I am a cheap ass.

NO!!!!!!!

Do not use any type of "finger" puller. Only use pullers specially designed for pulling the S/C pulley. The stock pulley is so soft that you will bend the snot out of it and may end up damaging the shaft in the process.

Herc, I think he said pulleY no pulleR.

And to answer your question, no you can't. You can only use specially designed supercharger pullies, along with speically designed pullers.

Besides, you probably don't have the supporting mods to RUN a 3" pulley, given the question being asked.

dont even think of doing a pulley swap......but if you do run a smaller pulley with no supporting mods you might as well run a 2.6"

Heh. I want to see someone try and press a 2.6" on an unaltered snout. That would make for some interesting drama, as long as it wasn't my car.

My money goes on the little threaded portion of the puller that goes into the snout breaking.

From the 97-03 FAQ:

Supporting mods for a 3.4" pulley:

CAI/FWI
U-bend delete
3" D/P
PCM
180* T-stat (drilled prefered)
1 heat range cooler plugs (copper core prefered)
A scanner is highly recommended in order to monitor the KR that will be introduced with the smaller pulley.
Hope that helps! cheers

Lesson on grammar? WTF does that have to do with the search tool on the site? p.s. I was a diesel mechanic in the Coast Guard and currently carry a 4.0 GPA at Texas State university. So you might want to think about what you know about someone before opening your mouth. Furthermore, it was a stupid question but asked with a bit of humor and I was almost certain of the answer. However, if a blower goes out on a diesel at sea it is common to use anything available. So as a lesson for you I won't say anything about you because I don't know you. But I have a good idea of your age and type.

bobcatgtp10, don't worry about it. It's better to ask and find out then to waste money not knowing.

I spent most all of my time on detroit diesels but did have the opportunity to help rebuild 2 Alco V18's on the CG Cutter Dauntless.

They were huge, I got to crawl in the crankcase and change the main bearings.

As for the truck, go with a Cummins or even a Powerstroke. They will both last much longer, but Dodge's are known to fall apart around the engine!

Sorry mis read the OP I was on a borrowed computer and short on time lol.

Years ago I rebuilt 2 Detroit Diesel 671s. Tore em down to the bare block sent the parts out for machining and put em back together. Also rebuilt the 671 blowers as well.

Now if you can put a Cummins mated to an Allison tranny into a rig now your talkin.

I'd like to apologize for coming off aggressively.

I figured you might be another new member that comes on, askes some dumb question, and then never shows their face again. *cough* twin-turbo topics *cough*

So once again, I'd like to say, I'm sorry.

The best bet is to get a MPS from ZZP or one of the other vendors, this requires a puller to remove the stock pulley then replace it with their hub after that pulley changes are a snap.Chico(pops)

They aren't wide, except from certain people (ZZP). Theirs come with 8ribs so you can do the 8rib conversion later if you want.

a magnuson nose drive from pfyc.com doesn't look like a bad option either for a high mileage car

Just heard this powerstroke diesel ford today, OMG, loudest turbo I have ever heard on one of those trucks. He must have had something done to it, I never heard anything with a turbo diesel in stock form sounding that freaking loud. Sounded like a GP turbo at WQT, but he wasn't going wot in the truck!
