The CAM is inside the engine, that twisting bar goes accross the valley, and the lifters are in the block, kind of a bad angle... and Thanks! im trying to get back more offten, i miss it here!

The twisty thing is the balance shaft. It's connected to the timing chain (there's a balance shaft gear that rotates with a cam gear), all it does is help the engine run a tiny bit smoother. I took out my balance shaft gear so the balance shaft itself is still in there but it doesn't do anything.

The cam is almost directly below that balance shaft but you cannot see it.

ok. Thanks for the pics, Mike, seeing the valley a bit closer did make Drummer's description a whole lot easier to understand.

Why, unless you're running a double roller?

Yeah, my engine wasn't a PITA to work on, just time consuming with me doing all the labor. I'll be so happy when it's finished. Wednesday the S/C is going back on, weather permitting.

well it was done not to hard of a job i must say 4 hours it took to do both and that was cuz the dang auto place gave us the wrong gaskets plus we needed some antifreeze but i will be posting pictures tonight and if i can remember a detailed outline of doing the back one and even the front one.
