I have decided to do the intake upgrade first rather than the appearence or the PCM( this way the wife won't know right away). I've been going through the articles and the store options for this. I would eventually like to integrate the hood ports for a CAI system. If I chose to go with the traditional cone, can I upgrade to the full CAI kit in the near future without a lot of hassle? Thanks, Folks.

Yes you can. If you build your own CAI your possibilities are up to you, and you'll save a lot of money.

I just went and picked up a 3" 45 degree elbow tonight to start my intake project. I already had the 3" pipe from a potato cannon project. Now I just need a flexible coupler (Lowe's was out) and a cone filter along with a box of some sort.

Would you guys recommend 1/4" plywood as a good material for a air box? I'd rather not use cardboard or sheetmetal.

Hello,

I used Plexi-Glass.
I made a template out of cardboard, and used it to cut the Plexi..... This saves a bit of money on mistakes made with the original cuts.

Later now,
Clint

Not to mention Plexiglas is lighter than plywood.

It's also more expensive and you have to be more careful cutting it (it can chip/crack pretty easily) compared to plywood. I doubt 2 pounds more from using plywood would really be noticed. Oh well, guess I'll be stopping by Lowes again today.

I picked up my plexi for about $8 out of the "scrap bin" at the local plastics shop. A buck a pound is what they sell their scrap for, and it's brand new plastic, just left over from their bigger projects.

I used a skill saw for my straight cuts, and a zip saw for my curves. It is easy to work with if you have the right tools.... Be sure to wear safety glasses while cutting.... This stuff likes to hurt you.

Been there, done that when I made a window for my PC. Which is why I'm not enthusiastic to work with it again.

if you are going to use plywood use 1/8th or 1/4 inch plywood not 3/4 inch plywood its more expencive and weighs more there is a slight chance that the 1/8th or 1/4 inch plywood could in the distant future rot a little quicker but with using it you can replace it a lot eaiser then the 3/4 inch stuff but you would probably be better to use plexiglass since there is no rot just the possibility of it drying out in a few years plus it looks cooler.

If you want to use fiberglass, you can built the box using cardboard and then cover it with fiberglass. I built a CAI this way a few years ago, but I got rid of it when I got a thrasher CAI for $75 on ebay. cool
