I've been living with a car (00 GP SE) that has had an issue with shifting rough occasionally. I've put too much money in it to let it go. Although I feel it's only the pressure control solenoid, I have come to realize that what would be best is a new transmission altogether.

My question(s) is this... do all 00 GP's essentially have the same tranny? The 4t65e, right? Is there a certain model of trans I should be shopping for? Should I go with a rebuild or a brand new from dealership transmission? What should I expect to pay for both?

Thanks!

97 GT has 4t65
97 GTP has 4t65HD

98-03 GT's have the 4t65e
98-03 GTP's have 4t65eHD

97's were vacuum modulated, 98+ are electronically controlled.

I think I'd rather buy something rebuilt... with better quality parts. I don't want the same parts failing on me 20k down the road. BTW, I do have a 3.1, but I thought I read somewhere that I have the 4t65e trans... I'll have to check it out, anyone know which code to look for under my trunk lid?

If I am equipped with the 4t65e trans, can I dump an HD tranny in?

If you have a 4t65e trans already then you can swap in the 4t65e and HD diff.

But I do have to ask why? Are you doing performance that requires an HD diff? Don't get me wrong its good to have but honestly why spend more money if you wont need it? The standard 4t65e is good up to 275whp. I am very doubtful you are pushing anywhere near that on a 3.1 N/A engine.

Nevermind, found it... option code M15=4t65e... which is the trans I have. Anyone know if I would benefit, or if it is even possible to throw a HD tranny in?

What do you think about this place?

Triple edge Performance is great but with the HD trans you need the HD differential as well to run the hp rated. (Not included in that price).

Again I have to ask why? Just pick up a stock trans with low miles from Ed or someone else. If you set on getting a rebuilt trans etc then ZZP or Triple Edge are your best bet unless you know someone who can rebuild it with parts your provide. What are your plans for your car?

I answered your question 1 post before yours.

Well... I was thinking. With all the money I've thrown at this car already, it's going to take a pretty bad car wreck to walk away from it. I just thought that it might be nice to have a trans capable of a supercharged engine... for sometime down the road. Would it operate okay with a HD trans? I'd hate to have to buy one twice...

And again... I'm just looking for something that the same parts won't go bad in anytime soon. My motor has about 40k on it, so I'd like to see my car last about another 100k.

Hmm I know loads of people with top swaps or ssm90 kits who are still running the non HD trans fine. The HD diff is more for taking off from the line. Also it stops the 1 wheel burnouts.

If you plan on doing a engine swap and you want to use the new trans on your 3.1 and the L67 3.8 then you have a choice of getting the Torque converter for the S/C engine or for the N/A 3.1

Also depending on how much hp you plan on running the price will go up on the performance trans I.E stronger parts.

$1500 will get a trans that can handle high 12's roughly on the quarter of you have the HD Diff.

So for what I'll use it for right now, which is just driving my 3.1 around... how much should I spend on a rebuilt?

You will save loads of money if you plan ahead and know your goals. If you plan to do an engine swap in the future then plan for it. Why build the trans twice?

Look most shops will charge around that price for a rebuild that will not be ready for excessive strain or hp. Idk its dependent on what you want.

Rebuilds cost $1000-1500 depending one where you go and the condition of the hard parts of your tranny.

To answer your main question about what you should do, you want to contact Ed Morad and get a low-mileage 4t65e transmission from a similar year car. This is the answer to what you are asking.

A new transmission is roughly the same cost as a rebuild but the rebuild does nothing more than replace clutches and bands. A new, low-milage tranny means all the hard parts, bands, and clutches have little wear.

I don't think there's any way (besides stupidity) that your 3.1 could frag a tranny. It takes a fair amount of power (not a whole lot though) to really start breaking stuff in them.

I'm running 13s on a non-HD 4t65e with 130k miles. I had a rebuild around 117k iirc.
