Hi guys, im currently in the middle of a motor swap of the L36 out of a 1999 oldsmobile with less than 20k into a 86 fiero gt.

I have almost everything i need done but i am currently having an ignition issue

the ICU seemed to work well except for a single coil, I replaced that coil and it would fire fine, i replaced the wires and it seemed as if the timing was advanced, i removed the wires and tried to count the spark and get an idea if something was crossed, about half way thru cranking the motor the spark stopped.

i checked the fuses and all power supplys but it seems as if everything is still fine.

should i replaced the icu the cam sensor or crank sensor?

is there a way i can check any of these items without changing them first? should i look for anything else?

i still get injector pulse and everything seems to work except the spark.

any help is appreciated

Ignition control module (I guess what you're calling the icu) can be tested at most autoparts places if you take it in.

How is the electronic setup on that motor? Are you using all of the original motors parts and computer? Custom harness? I'm not familiar with Fiero swaps, so it's hard for me to give advice.

im using the original computer with mild programing and a few deletes( like theft, egr and few others) i did most of the wiring custom but took a decent amout of time and is quality work, basicly the only thing removed is the powersteering pump.

I think you need to have some other stuff pulled form that PCM like tranny stuff and the like.

I know ZZP tunes custom PCMs just for situations like that.

It may very well be some sort of inadvertant tranny-setting issue.

I do'nt have an answer for you but I am curious as to why if your going to all the trouble of a engine swap why the L-36 and not the L-67 ?

because the L36 only has 20k miles, and was readily avalible, i cant find a L67 for the life of me, and they are all expensive and in shit condition in this area. also the performance gain isnt enought to make me hunt that much more, and this l36 will prolly be turbo'ed once i get her running

Good plan.
If you have access to an oscilloscope you can test the sensors out. If you can replace the PCM then I would try that too. Check fuses, etc...

If you want to S/C you can hit up ed morad for all the hard parts for a top swap. Ohh you'll need a custom PCM. ZZP tunes PCMs for use with non computer controlled transmissions. Unless you were able to fit the 4T65 in there.

i was actually thinkin about doing a doing a top swap i have heard you actually get a bit more power (due to higher compression) but reliablity may be a problem due to weaker bottom end.

I kept the standard 5speed transmission from the fiero and have already had the pcm programmed.

I am going to attempt to bring the ignition control unit to advanced auto parts and get it tested.

it just bothers me that it went out mid crank but fuses and everything are ok.

i will keep you updated, and thanks for the help guys

As for the bottom end it'll handle all the power you can throw at it. The L36 and L67s have the same crank and bearings. All the 9 second cars are running stock bottom ends.

Bottom end isnt the problem with a top-swapped car. The tranny is though.

Dont look at me as an example, as i have no idea what is broken with my L67 on 9.4 to 1.
