Street Scene Speed Grilles
Installation Instructions

[NOTE: Click the thumbnail picture to view a higher resolution version.]

These directions are intended as a guide to install the Street Scene Speed Grilles. To complete the installation, you'll need the following tools:

  • Philips head (star) screwdriver
  • Regular (flat) screwdriver

To begin, you'll want to take the grilles out of the box and examine them. Here I have them laid out on the trunk of my decrepid '93 Nissan Sentra Classic, which serves double-duty as both a display table AND a means of very basic transportation.

The kit includes the 4 grilles and a set of metal clips. My package contained 24 of these clips, although I only used 16 for the installation.

Next we begin to prep the car for installation. The very first thing to do is to remove the plastic factory grilles from the front fascia.

Removing the grille is a very easy task. Simply remove the two screws holding it in place using your philips head screwdriver. The grille will come right out.

Next we want to remove the baffle on top of the radiator to gain access to the back of the front fascia. Please note that this baffle is only on some 1998 and all 1999 models. 2000 and 2001 models have a different style baffle that's even easier to remove. All 1997 and most 1998 models do not have a baffle there at all.

Removing the clips that hold the baffle in place is also very easy. Simply use the Philips head screwdrive to take the screw out from the middle of the clip. Then use your regular (flat head) screwdriver to lift the clip out of its hole. You can then pull the clip out with your fingers and set it aside.

There are 4 such clips holding the baffle in place, 2 on each side. They're all removed exactly the same way. Once you have all 4 clips off, you can pull the baffle right off and have access to the inside of the front fascia.

[OPTIONAL] Before proceding, I chose to smooth out the edges of the speed grilles in order to avoid scratching the car during installion. I used my rotary bench with a wire brush attachment. This is entirely optional, there's certainly no need to go find a rotary bench to do this with if you don't want to. Street Scene recomends putting tape around the grille opening to prevent these scratches. But smoothing out the edges took me all of 5 minutes for all 4 grilles, so I figured I may as well do it since I had the tools.

Here's a shot of the grille in place in the opening on the front fascia.

To help make the rest of these directions easier to understand, the remainder of the pictures were taken on an old front fascia that's been removed from the car. Please note that removing the front fascia is NOT necessary in any way. But since I already had one handy, I figured it would make these instructions easier to understand. It's very hard to take good pictures through the grilles.

The first step is to position the grille in place in the grille opening.

16-placement-s.jpg - 4622 Bytes 17-placed-s.jpg - 4956 Bytes 18-bending-s.jpg - 4669 Bytes

If necessary, feel free to bend the edges of the grilles a little to ensure that they fit properly inside the opening. The included instructions state that you should cut off the two tabs that were used to hold the factory grilles in place. I chose to leave them in place so I could re-install the factory grilles in the future. You may wish to cut them out to make sure they're not visible, but I didn't find them very noticeable through the grilles.

With the grille in place, you can now insert the clips that hold the grille in position. The clips are slid into place from the back of the grille, inside the front fascia. Again, this can easily be done by reaching behind the front fascia through the opening where the baffle was. It's not necessary to remove the front fascia.

The clips have a kind of "hump" on one side (the top side in the above picture). This side should be the one that touches the grille when the clip is inserted into place.

Simply slide the clips onto the rear edge of the grille opening, making sure that it's holding the grille to the front fascia securely. The three pictures below should show this fairly clearly. Please note that these pictures are of the back of the front fascia to show the position of the clip properly.

You should use 4 clips to hold each grille in place. Two on the top and two on the bottom.

Repeat the process for the other top grille and you'll be all done that part of the installation! You can stand back and check out the results. You can also put the baffle back on the car. Simply pop the clips back into place and replace the screws at their centers. Do not tighten the screws, just turn them until the head of the screw becomes flush with the clip.

Next come the bottom grilles! On 1997-1999 models, these are much easier to do since the lower front fascia is easily accessible. On 2000-2001 models, this is a little more complicated because there's a large panel there blocking access to the rear of the front fascia. Unfortunately, I haven't seen this panel for myself and do not know how to remove it. But I've been told it's possible to install the grilles without removing the panel at all. Hopefully I can get some more detailed instructions regarding that panel in the near future. But for now, here's how to mount the lower grilles:

First, place the grilles into the front fascia opening. It's much easier to do this from the front, but be careful of scratches. Simply push the grilles in until the edges are flush with the back edge of the opening. Please disregard the damage on the front fascia I'm using, it's been taken off the car for a reason :)

28-botgrille-s.jpg - 4842 Bytes 29-botgrilleplacement-s.jpg - 5281 Bytes 30-botgrilleplaced-s.jpg - 4341 Bytes

The retaining clips are placed in the exact same way as for the top grilles. Simply slide the clips into place to hold the grille to the front spoiler, making sure that the "hump" on the clip is resting against the grille. Place 4 clips around the grille to hold it securely.

And that's it! Once the two lower grilles are held in place with 4 clips each, you're good to go. Stand back and admire the work. Drive around and show them off.
